Example

A question has arisen regarding the depreciation method for roads and bridges in the state.

Check the topical index in GARS for “depreciation,” which refers to both the original GASB statement and the location in GASB's Codification. One can use either location referenced, but if one uses the Codification one must also cite the date of the Codification since the Codification changes. Although the answer appears quickly that governments may use any established depreciation method, it is smart to read all of the information referenced. Thus one also learns that governments may depreciate dissimilar assets of the same class, such as state roads and bridges.

If one does not subscribe to a database that includes GARS, then use the online GASB store, which offers the pronouncement, implementation guide, and other documents. The pronouncements include GASB Statements, Interpretations, Technical Bulletins, and exposure drafts. Each statement is separately priced at slightly more than $20. If necessary, find summaries of GASB Statements and Interpretations at GASB's website under the “Technical Issues” tab and then down the menu to “Summaries/Status.”
